Zion National Park, Utah
Designed to reflect the drama and scale of its’ natural setting, the lodge sits on an elevated sandstone cliff to capture sweeping views of the distant peaks and valley floor below. To adapt to the terrain, the multi-level building is asymmetrical with contoured and stepped wings, culminating in an overlook tower at the top level. Embracing the National Park Service’s desire for a ‘building in harmony with Nature’, 4240 Architecture employed biomimicry strategies to mimic the stone outcroppings and cliff wall with indigenous buff-colored sandstone walls, battered piers, and chimneys rising out of the ground. Low, hipped-shingled roofs, stained dark olive green, match the surrounding landscape, while rough-cut horizontal sliding windows and heavy timber beams create a ruggedness and sense of scale to integrate East Gateway Lodge further into Zion National Park, Utah.
